William Lowell 'Bill' Smith Sr.

Mr. William 'Bill' Lowell Smith, 89, of Goose Creek, SC, passed away Saturday, October 18, 2014. Bill was born August 3, 1925 in Parler, SC the son of the late Manzy Smith and Myrtle Dantzler Smith Gregg. Bill served as a scout in the United States Army during World War II inThe Pacific Theatre. He trained with the 24th Infantry Division and fought with the 65th Infantry Division. Bill took a lot of pride in visiting the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. He was proud of serving in the United States Army and loyal in attending many of the Army reunions for both divisions. Bill retired from Massey Coal Company as a supervisor and prior to that he worked many years at Etiwan Fertilizer Company. He was a deacon at Deer Park Baptist Church and was a Past Master of Goose Creek Masonic Lodge # 401, the first Worthy Patron of John L. Flynn # 277 of the Order of the Eastern Star and was the Chapter Dad for the Goose Creek Demolay for many years. He loved gardening and the outdoors. His family remembers him as a loving husband, wonderful father and fantastic 'Grandy'. He treated his children's spouses as if they were his own. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Winifred Wright Smith and one infant daughter, Joan Dantzler Smith. Survivors include four children: Leanne Amari and her husband Joseph of North Augusta, SC; William L Smith Jr. and his wife Vickie of Goose Creek, SC; Mark J Smith Sr. and his wife Paulette of Goose Creek, SC; and Kelly Smith Bishop and her husband Robert of Summerville, SC; seven grandchildren, Shannon Penley of Summerville, Amanda Muns of North Augusta, SC, Casey Tiller of Goose Creek, Robbie Bishop of Summerville, Mark Smith, Jr. of Columbia SC, Matt Bishop of Florence SC, and Daniel Smith of Auburn, AL; and nine great-grandchildren, Jordan Muns, Alexis Muns, Ansley Muns, Harrison Penley, Logan Tiller, Landon Tiller, Bryce Smith, Cohen Smith, and Ryley Smith. A funeral service will be held 1:00 pm, Wednesday October 22, 2014 in the chapel of McAlister-Smith Funeral Home Goose Creek Chapel. Burial will follow at 3:30 pm, Jerusalem Cemetery, Old Number Six Hwy., Santee, SC 29142. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Tuesday October 21, 2014 in the chapel of McAlister-Smith Funeral Home Goose Creek Chapel.
