William Randall (Randy) Leddy, 78 of Daniel Island, South Carolina, died peacefully, with family, on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.
He was born on October 17, 1944 in Los Angeles, CA and is preceded in death by his parents, Olwyn Holzum Leddy Davies and William Leddy, and his beloved, Dad, Eugene Davies.
Randy graduated from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, where he was an outstanding varsity basketball player for four years and is a member of the school’s Sports Hall of Fame. ODU had a moment of silence before the first home game, after his death, in honor of him.
In 1967, Randy reported to Navy Aviation school to begin his 26 years of service to his country and his exciting aviation career. He said frequently, “If you have a job you love, you never have to go to work.” He never went to work.
He received his Navy Pilot Wings of Gold in April, 1969. He served in three fighter squadrons on airwing staffs and an attack squadron. Other tours included two commands, two major staffs and Naval War College where he earned two Master’s Degrees. He flew multiple fighter aircraft, including the F-4 and F-14. In 1971 he attended Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun). His call sign was “Brewmaster.” His grands affectionally call him, “Bew”.
He retired with the rank of Captain in 1994, completing over 5500 flight hours and over 900 carrier landings.
The Leddys lived in Gulf Breeze, FL for over 30 years, where Randy built Gulf Breeze Tire Centre in 1996. The family continues to own the business. The automotive center was a natural progression of his love of cars, owning 5 antique cars. Joking, his friends told him, he built the business to have a place to work on his cars. Along with his fondness for cars was his fondness for music, especially the old tunes. His music playlists are extensive.
In 2014, the Leddys moved to Daniel Island, SC to be closer to family. Randy’s family was his pride and joy, and how he loved them. He would eagerly and proudly tell anyone, who asked or didn’t ask, about his family. That love was evident to all.
He is survived by his wife of over 54 years, Carolyn Lessenberry Leddy, sons, Michael (Susanne) and Lee (Rebecca), and his loving PGKs (precious grand kids), Jacob, Olivia, Evan, Logan, Connor and Sophia.
He is also survived by brothers, Rodney (Seveti) and Stan (Irene); sister, Allwyn (Tom) and brother-in-law, Robert Lessenberry (Sandy).
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 8, 2023, at 10:30 am at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, in Gulf Breeze, FL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, 75 Fairpoint Drive, Gulf Breeze, Florida 32561 or to a favorite charity.
