Susan Marion LeVan

Susan Marion LeVan, 80, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Friday, July 5, 2024. Born on November 15, 1943, in Albany, NY, she was the daughter of the late Gladys DePorter Tobin and the late Charles W. Tobin.

Susan, known as Sue by her family and friends, will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was married for 58 years to the love of her life Jay. After Jay’s graduation from the Air Force Academy in 1966 they married and embarked on a beautiful life. They created a family built on faith and love with their three daughters. Sue was an amazing supporter of Jay and his military service. After raising their daughters Sue and Jay moved to Charleston to begin the second chapter of their life together. They created many happy memories in Charleston with their children and grandchildren. One of Sue’s happiest times was being surrounded by Jay, her children and grandchildren at her graduation from the College of Charleston. Sue faced several challenges in her life and Jay was always there to support her. No matter what the challenge she always chose to dance in the rain rather than to cry in the storm. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, Susan is preceded in death by her daughter, Terra McGonegal.

Susan is survived by her husband, Jay LeVan; daughter, Kelly Pierce and her husband David; daughter, Anne-Marie Shelton and her husband Marc; grandchildren: Lilly McGonegal, Steele McGonegal, Nicholas Pierce, and Harrison Shelton; step-grandsons, Kyle Shelton and Brandon Shelton; siblings: Richard Tobin, Charles Tobin and Betsy Desch; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 15, 2024, at Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, 990 Etiwan Park Street on Daniel Island in Charleston.

Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
