Doctor Stephen R. Fred, 74, of Charleston, husband to Lisa D. Fred (Barnes) of Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest on February 28, 2020, after a long illness, surrounded by his family.
Born on May 05, 1945, in Long Branch, NJ. Stephen was the son of the late Jack C Fred and Irene Fred.
Stephen, a dentist (retired) by profession was also an artist, a woodworker and enjoyed working on mechanical projects. Steve loved water-skiing and helped teach many people the sport. His skill in teaching was helped by the innovative aids he invented to help novices improve their skills.
Steve grew up in Atlanta, GA, and attended Marist High School in Atlanta. He went on to the University of Georgia and later Emory Dental School. Steve entered the Public Health Service after dental school, for six years and was stationed in Anadarko, OK, and then on to NIH in Washington, D.C.
Steve was a member of Life Park Church in Mt Pleasant. He traveled on mission trips many times to Central America and Africa and also went on to help in disaster relief efforts in Texas.
Besides his wife, Lisa, Stephen is survived by Matthew Fred of Haddonfield, NJ, Sheryl (Fred) Aaron of Bethesda, MD, Peter Just of Fairfax, VA, David Just of Silver Spring, MD, Norman Fred of Traverse City, MI, and 5 grandchildren; Zev, Isaac, Asher, Sophie, and Nathaniel.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 6, 2020, at 1:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral & Cremation in West Ashley. The service will be held on Friday, March 6, 2020, at 3:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral & Cremation in West Ashley.
