Shirley Cauthen

Shirley Ann McKlveen Cauthen, 84, of Mt. Pleasant, a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, great-grandmother and dear friend to so many, passed away peacefully into the arms of Christ on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, surrounded by her family. She graduated from Lake City (SC) High School in 1951 and received her Registered Nursing degree from the Medical University of SC in 1954. Being an active member of Hibben United Methodist for over 40 years, she spent her life worshipping and serving the Lord and many, many others in the choir, UMW, Ladies Bible study, teaching Sunday School and any other tasks that were needed. Shirley was a devoted supporter and fan of The Citadel and attended as many football, baseball, basketball and volleyball events as she could. Her happiest times was spending time with her family, especially at Thanksgiving; and, in her later years, she was a devoted volunteer at East Cooper Medical Center. Survivors include her loving husband of 62 years, Lewis J. Cauthen, Jr.; children, Lewis J Cauthen,III (Annie), Beth C. Tate and Cramer R. Cauthen; brothers, Cramer J. McKlveen, Jr. (Wanda), F. Patrick McKlveen (Jenny) and sister Eva Renee “Chic” Mercuri (Paul); and sister-in-law, Mary C. Seabrook. Also surviving are grandchildren Jackson W. Cauthen, Margaret C. Crockett (Peter), Benjamin E. Cauthen, Samuel L. Tate, IV and Grace Anderson Tate and great-grandchildren Naomi M. Crockett and Fiona P. Crockett and many, many nephews and nieces. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Cramer J. McKlveen and Eva K. McKlveen; sister, Ladora; and brother in law, E.M. “Mike” Seabrook. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at 3:30 PM at Hibben United Methodist Church, 690 Coleman Blvd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464. The family will receive friends one hour prior in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Lewis and Shirley Cauthen Scholarship at The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, 171 Moultrie Avenue, Charleston, SC 29409.
