It's with deep sadness that we announce that Sharon Anne Ballard, 69, of John's Island, SC by way of Falls Church, VA, passed away on November 18, 2024, in the comfort of her home. She was the cherished wife of Scott Ballard for over 46 years and a devoted mother to Erin Ballard and Kelley McElroy (Daryl).
Born on October 19, 1955, in Arlington, VA, Sharon was the daughter of the late Betty Lee and the late Elvin "Big Jim" Willcock. In addition to her parents, Sharon is preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy Willcock.
Those who knew Sharon know all too well that she is not one to be fussed over - making this that much harder to write. So, in true Sharon style, we're going to tell it like it is.
Sharon was a foundation of strength - always there when we needed her the most to offer wise words, unwavering support, and an abundance of love and compassion. She was a down-to-earth lady, never needing expensive or fancy things to find happiness. Instead, she found contentment in the simple joys in life, taking pride in the life that she and Dad built together.
She loved what she loved.
She could regularly be found with a good book in hand (her bookshelf was practically a Stephen King shrine). She was in her black Chucks, jeans, and a long-sleeved shirt, always. The Wizard of Oz - collectibles lined the walls of 305 Pine Street for countless years. A lover of dogs, the beach, and spending her time outside enjoying working in the yard. A "Washington Football Team" fan through and through, and when there wasn't a game on, she was more than likely watching The Waltons. A homebody who was perfectly content sticking to regularly scheduled programming and routine. Telling Scott and Kelley, "NO, you may NOT open a present early." (While we cannot confirm her 'love' of the whining, we can say with certainty that this event happened every single Christmas and most birthdays). Her favorite color was green - everything green (to include her most favorite car she ever owned, her 2003 Mini Cooper). She always had an ice-cold Diet Coke in her cup. Peter Pan peanut butter or Velveeta cheese and Wonder bread sandwiches with chips and our dip (IYKYK.) Spending the entire day cooking only to yell at us for "eating too fast!" on every. single. holiday. ever. Her taste in music thrilled us - from The Beatles (obviously!), Backstreet Boys, and PINK blasting through the speakers in the car as we sang along.
Above all else, she adored us - her girls and her high school sweetheart turned lifelong love, Scott.
Sharon's memory will live on in the hearts of her husband, Scott; her daughters, Erin Ballard and Kelley McElroy (Daryl); her sisters, Debbie Halverson and Susan Ballard; Myrtle the dog; and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Hers was a life well-lived, one to be proud of. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. In the words of her husband and dad to us girls, Scott -
"Goodnight, goodbye, and happy dreams.
We will miss you until the end of time and our love for you will never, ever fade.
We welcome family and friends to share any memories, photos, stories, or tributes they have of our beloved mom. We will celebrate Sharon's life in the coming months. Details regarding the gathering will be shared with all once arrangements are complete.
