Sara Johnson Reece, 92, of West Columbia, South Carolina, was welcomed home by her Lord on Saturday, November 9, 2024, where she has been joyfully reunited with her beloved husband, Col. Jack Reece.
Born on June 3, 1932, in West Columbia, SC, she was the cherished daughter of the late Blanche Johnson (Hood) and Joseph Johnson. Sara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack; her parents; her brothers, Walter, Joe, Charles, and Harry, along with their spouses; and her dear sister-in-law, Joye R. Harmon. Now, she is joyfully reunited with her loved ones in the presence of the Lord.
Sara had a zest for life and a deep love for God and her country. As a faithful Air Force wife, she created a warm and loving home everywhere Jack was stationed, no matter how far they traveled. She touched many lives through her work, especially during her time at the University of South Carolina and Columbia College, where she made lifelong friends. In her retirement, she found fulfillment in volunteering at Lexington Medical Center, serving others with a generous heart. Sara’s love extended to her family, whom she treasured dearly, and her friends, with whom she shared countless memories over games of Bridge. Her spirit was bright and her kindness evident to all who knew her. She found beauty in God’s creation, particularly in animals, birds, and trees. As an active member of Saluda River Baptist Church before her health declined, Sara’s faith was the foundation of her life, a beacon that guided her path. Sara leaves behind a legacy of love and faith in her daughters, Debbie Bugenske (George), Millie Simpson (Bill), and Janine Wrecsics; her 10 grandchildren; and her numerous great-grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as “mama Sara”. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
A service to celebrate Sara’s life will be held on Thursday, November 14th, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Chapel, 200 State Street, West Columbia, SC, 29169. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 12 noon. She will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery on Monday, November 18th, at 10 a.m.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and staff at Generations of Chapin and MSA Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
