Sara King Wright

March 22, 1917 — December 2, 2014

Sara King Wright passed away in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, on December 2, 2014 at the age of 97. Sara was born in Vernon, Texas, on March 22, 1917, the oldest child of Thomas Albert King, a pioneer physician in Wilbarger County, and Ethel Stuart King, loving mother of three. She graduated from Vanderbilt University, Class of 1938, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. In 1940 she married the love of her life, William Hardy Wright. During the Second World War, they lived in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1955, Sara, her husband, and her son moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, where for sixteen years she was active in civic and church groups. In 1971 she and her husband retired to Dallas, Texas, where she was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church, Dallas Woman’s Club, the Junior League Sustainers, Dallas Garden Club, the Mary Kay Craig class, and the Maytheon Club. Sara was active in civic, social, and religious activities all her life. She cherished her friends wherever she lived. Friends and neighbors eagerly awaited her Christmas gifts of homemade pimento cheese. In 2010, Sara moved to Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, to be near her family. Her grandchildren will remember the amazing breakfasts she cooked and the spirited stories she told about growing up in Vernon-being close to their Gigi was like being a little closer to the sun. She is survived by her son, Thomas Stuart Wright, and his wife, Peggy; her grandchildren, William Stuart Wright and his wife, Jennifer, and Ann Calvin Wright and her husband, Jebediah Reed; three great-grandchildren, Cooper, Grayson, and Willa; her sister, Doris (Mrs. Jack Snell), of Vernon; and many beloved nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Dr. Stuart Owen for his loving care of Sara during her years in Dallas as well as the staff and caregivers at Somerby for looking after Sara while living in Mt. Pleasant. She is preceded in death by her husband, William Hardy Wright, and her brother, Thomas Albert King Jr. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to Vernon College, 4400 College Drive, Vernon, Texas 76384, honoring the memory of her parents. Graveside services will be held at Eastview Memorial Park, Vernon, Texas, at 1:30 PM on Monday, December 8th, 2014.
