Samuel Mason Williams of Isle of Palms, South Carolina passed away on Saturday, July 22 at the
age of 88. He was married to the late Nancy Clarke Williams and is survived by his children,
Mark Harrison Williams and Karla Elizabeth Crawford (Geddings). He was known and loved as
“Papa” and is survived by his six grandchildren, Brig Brannon, Rucker Brannon, Geddings
Crawford III, Eleanor Crawford, Ashley Johnson (Donald), and Paige Reed (Gage). He was
predeceased by his parents Norman and Ellen Williams of Colonial Heights, VA and six brothers
and sisters.
Sam attended Petersburg High School and graduated with a Business Administration degree
from Virginia Tech University in 1957. He worked for Life of Virginia as an investigator, Amour
Pharmaceuticals in sales and Mallinckrodt Medical in sales of nuclear medicine. Sam raised his
family in Atlanta, Georgia for 25 years, retired and moved to the Isle of Palms, South Carolina
where he was known and loved as “The Mayor of 42 nd Avenue.” He was an active member of
The First United Methodist Church of Isle of Palms and enjoyed walking the beach every
morning and spending time with his many friends on the island. His greatest joy in life was his
grandchildren. He rarely missed a football or baseball game and attended every party thrown in
honor of “his boys!”
A graveside service for Sam Williams will be held Friday, July 28 at Blandford Cemetery
Petersburg, Virginia. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 o’clock, Tuesday, August 1 st
at The First United Methodist Church Isle of Palms. Immediately following the service, the
family will greet friends at Islander 71 on Isle of Palms.
At the request of Sam, the family asks that those in attendance for services dress casual.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The First United Methodist Church
Isle of Palms or Isle of Palms Fire Department Station 2 (Post Office Box 508
Isle of Palms, South Carolina 29451).
