Samuel Anthony Gentile, 98, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2018.
Mr. Gentile was born on January 5, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II rising to the rank of Sergeant. He was retired from Grumman Aerospace Corp., Bethpage, N.Y. Previously he worked for NASA as a contracting officer on the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM), which was the lander portion of the Apollo spacecraft. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Marie (Pucillo) Gentile in 2006. Survivors include his three daughters and their husbands, Elaine and (Thomas) Lovett, Christine Holahan and (Tim Fischer), Joan and (Robert) Czarniecki, and his son, John Gentile; six grandchildren, Andrew and Gregory Holahan, David Sodaitis, Kathryn Famely, Jason Czarniecki and Nathaniel Gentile; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 pm on May 11, 2018 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, James Island.
