Born on July 8, 1932 in Saltville, VA, he was the son of Floyd McKinney and Maggie Poore McKinney.
SMSgt Sam McKinney (Retired) served in the United States Air Force as a Flight Engineer for 26 years. He was also retired from the Postal Service. He was an avid bowler and fishermen throughout his life and a fan of the Atlanta Braves.
Sam is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Ruth McKinney and Helen Mitchell (Bill); and his nephew, David Mark (Jody) Mitchell.
Sam is survived by his son, Michael Joseph McKinney (Catherine); his grandsons, Michael Joseph (Joey) McKinney Jr. (Rhea) and Michael Everett Dreher-Byrd (Jennifer); his great-grandson, Michael (Mikey) Dreher-Byrd Jr.; his sister, Christine Denton; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 2, 2024 from 11:00AM - 12:00PM followed by a service with full Military Honors starting at 12:00PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral & Cremation, 869 St. James Ave., Goose Creek, SC 29445. The burial will be held at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Springs, VA at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Easter Seals, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and your local ASPCA or animal shelter.
