Ruth Almers Killilea Sossamon, age 86, of Charleston, SC, passed away on July 4, 2015. Ruth was born in Elloree, SC, on August 16, 1928. She was the daughter of Robert F. Almers and Peggy Myers Almers. She was the widow of James Weldon Sossamon. Ruth had two children by a previous marriage to the late John (Jack) T. Killilea. Ruth graduated from Chicora High School in 1946. She enjoyed dancing on the old Folly pier with friends, bowling with her Rifle Club team, shopping, playing bingo and especially spending time with friends and family. She was predeceased by one sister and four brothers: Roberta Plahar of Michigan, Robert F. Almers, Jr. of Moncks Corner, George F. Almers of Texas, Joseph F. Almers of Charleston, and Raymond C. Almers of Charleston. Ruth is survived by her two children: Geraldine “Gerry†Sanders (Timmy) of Charleston and Michael John Killilea of Charleston; two grandchildren: Angela C. Smoak (Travis) of NC and Scott R. Sanders (Brandy) of VA; four great-grandchildren: Mackenzie and Bennett Smoak, and Calvin and Camryn Sanders; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind many dear friends throughout her life. The family would like to thank the very special people of Hospice of Charleston, especially Michelle Graves and Louise Davis. Also, Peggy King, Ruth’s caregiver during the day and Cindy Lockaby, her hairdresser who made home visits every week to make sure mom’s hair always looked perfect. Every one of you was a true gift from God and the family thanks you! A very special thank you to the loving staff at Hospice in Unit Patient Care Facility for helping Ruth get through her final journey peacefully and pain free. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Charleston, 3870 Leeds Avenue, Suite 101, North Charleston, SC 29405. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 13, 2015, from 7:00pm until 9:00pm, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel.
