Roy Lee Blackwell, 85, of Charleston, SC, died on Wednesday, August 17, 2016. He was born on Tuesday, August 11, 1931 in Durham, NC, son of the late Ethra Mae Blackwell. Born and raised in Durham, NC, Mr. Blackwell attended local schools and received a certificate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His career was in retail management. He worked for 35 years at Sears and 9 years at Builderama. After retirement, he volunteered and worked at Shadowmoss Plantation Golf Club for 22 years. He was an avid golfer and dedicated Duke fan, especially basketball. Active in many community activities in Durham, Mr. Blackwell volunteered in several positions with the Durham Public Schools; was instrumental in the organization of the Eno Valley Civitan Club, serving as charter president for two terms; was active in Park View Baptist Church, participating in two building programs. In 1976, he relocated to Charleston where he married Carol, his pride and joy. He was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church and belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Hephzibah, GA. He is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Carol Orr Blackwell; three daughters: Phyllis Blackwell, Sheila Miglarese and her husband, Sam, of Durham, NC and Janet Jones and her husband, Wayne, of Kings Mountain, NC; four step-children: Sabrina Mintz of Athens, GA; Belinda Durney and her husband, Bill, of Hume, VA; Louis Mintz, III and his wife, Kathy of Enid, OK and Sheila Pugh and her husband, Charley of Jacksonville, FL; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley on Friday, September 9, 2016, at 2:00 PM, with his son-in-law, Rev. Dr. Sam Miglarese officiating.
