Robert Allen Nigro, known by friends and family as “Bob”, died on June 30th at his home on Kiawah Island after a long battle with CNS Lymphoma.
Born on August 12th, 1949, to Lawrence and Doris Nigro, Bob was raised in Richmond, Virginia, where he attended Collegiate School and the University of Virginia. In 1971, Bob graduated from UVA with a degree in Finance. He served as Class President.
Bob had a long, successful career in finance, the bulk of his time spent at The First Boston Corporation in Chicago, Atlanta, and New York City offices. Later finishing his career at SEI Investments across various offices. Bob settled in Greenwich, Connecticut where he raised his two children. In 2002, Bob married Lee Anne Taylor and together, they retired to Kiawah Island, South Carolina in 2006.
Bob was an avid golfer playing regularly at the Kiawah Island Club and Briars Creek. Always active in his community, Bob served on the Executive Board of Directors of the Charleston Animal Society and Coastal Community Foundation and chaired the Investment Committees for both organizations. Bob also served on the Board of Trustees of the Kiawah Island Conservancy and was Chairman of the Golf Committee at Briars Creek. He steadfastly supported his beloved alma matter, UVA, served on the Alumni Board, and consistently headed up the Class of 1971 Reunion Committee.
Bob, an enthusiastic host, loved to cook often preparing elaborate multi-course meals for friends and family; with a particular fondness for Italian cuisine. In retirement, Bob embarked on Italian language classes. When not on the course or in the kitchen, Bob enjoyed tinkering with vintage cars, often joking that his “pride and joy” was his 1956 Austin Healy that he built from just a frame.
Bob is survived by his wife of 20 years, Lee Anne Taylor, his son, John Walter Nigro, daughter, Lillian Nigro Sigrist, four grandchildren: Sophie Prosser Sigrist, Charlotte Allen Sigrist, Louise Higgins Sigrist and Hunter John Walter Sigrist as well as his younger brother, Richard L. Nigro.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm, on Tuesday, September 10th at the River Course Club House.
