Rev. Dr. John “Jack” Ardrey McLaney, 88, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Friday, May 11, 2018.
He was born on June 27, 1929 in Charlotte, NC, son of the late Margaret Shaw Brown McLaney and the late Joseph Wheeler McLaney, Sr.
Jack served as a Presbyterian minister for 30 years, before serving as a presbytery executive in the Presbytery of Mississippi and eventually taking a position as interim executive at the Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery. From the time he was a child, Jack was an avid reader. He was an airplane enthusiast and enjoyed making airplane models, and eventually getting his pilot’s license. He was also a life-long sailor, and enjoyed watching any Nascar race. Jack loved history, especially Civil War and World War II history, and no one ever asked a question that he couldn’t answer about either. His family will remember him as a faithful Christian, and a kind and compassionate husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Beverly Tissot McLaney of Charleston, SC; two daughters: Margaret Anne Carney (Ed) of West Hartford, CT and Mary Lynn Runyon (David) of Louisville, KY; two sons: Roy Jeffrey Hodge of Louisville, KY and Christopher Alan Hodge (Jennifer) of Louisville, KY; five grandchildren: Anne Runyon; George “Teddy” Edward Carney, III; and Allyson, Ashley and Brooke Hodge; his brother, Joseph Wheeler McLaney, Jr. (Jane) of Charlotte, NC; his sister, Mary McLaney Mohr of Mechanicsville, VA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley, with a memorial service to follow.
