Phyllis Jetter, 89, of 2136 Tall Grass Cir., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29466, peacefully passed away on March 2nd, 2017.
She was born January 17th, 1928 in the Bronx, NY to the late Agnes W. LaCiel and the late John E. LaCiel.
Phyllis spent most of her adult life in Northford CT, where she lived on Cedar Lane for approximately 55 years. In that home, she raised her only daughter, Lauren Sullivan. Having a great attachment to her home, she never dreamed of leaving. She loved her gardening, looking for lucky four-leaf clovers, bird watching, feeding hummingbirds, and sipping endless cups of coffee on her outdoor patio while enjoying her large collection of wind chimes and buoy bells. Phyllis also appreciated a lifetime of numerous friends in Connecticut, including her close companion, the late Jim LaRosa.
She was an avid pet lover. Through the years, Phyllis raised many furry friends including dogs, cats, birds, a parrot named Polly, pet chickens and even an iguana. Phyllis also knew her way around the kitchen, and greatly loved cooking some of her favorite meals for her family including roast beef, liver & bacon, beef stew, chili, turnips, and her famous mashed potatoes (heavy on the cream and butter!).
Phyllis spent most of her career working at the phone company, retiring in 1991. Having worked as an operator, Phyllis was always fond of talking on the phone, including her favorite ritual of chatting with her older sister Rita on a daily basis. During retirement she took part in several special hobbies. She was an extremely talented artist and especially loved painting pictures with oils and pastels. She also relished her trips to the beach in Connecticut and Rhode Island, where she spent countless hours searching for treasure with her metal detector.
In 2013, a short visit to Charleston for the Thanksgiving holiday turned into a permanent stay after a hip injury. During her 3+ years in South Carolina, Phyllis made numerous new friends, and found a multitude of different favorite places to visit. There was not a single person she encountered who did not enjoy spending time with her. One of her favorite activities was visiting Red’s on Shem Creek for happy hour, enjoying the dolphins, drinking bloody marys, and shucking oysters.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Lauren P. Sullivan of Mt. Pleasant SC, three grandchildren, Brendyn W. Sullivan (wife Kori M. Sullivan) of Huntersville NC, Easton P. Sullivan (fiancé Jessica L. Johnson) of Prospect CT, Kyli Q. Sullivan of Mt. Pleasant SC, Greatgrandchildren Peyton F. Sullivan and Logan T. Sullivan, and sister Rita Wood of Ashland City TN.
She was predeceased by her loving parents, sister Mary Ellen Gargiulo, brother, Paul “Bobby” Hughes; and son-in-law William T “Sully” Sullivan.
A celebration of her life will be held at Red’s Icehouse on Sunday, March 19th between 11am-1pm. All are welcome.
