Nancy Stone Jenkins died peacefully and surrounded by family on February 11, 2022, in Mt. Pleasant, SC at the age of 84. She was the beloved wife of Orin Kenneth Jenkins, loving mother to their four children and proud grandmother to their twelve grandchildren.
Nancy was born on September 22, 1937 to the late Donald B. Stone and Ruth Hausner Stone in Schenectady, New York. After graduating from Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady, Nancy went on to study Child Development at Cornell University where she was also a member of Pi Beta Phi. During the spring of her senior year at Cornell Nancy met Orin who was also a Cornell student. Following their graduation, they were married in August of 1959.
Nancy’s career began with teaching second grade in Pittsburgh while Orin was doing his Basic Training. She then devoted her time to raising their four children in Fairfield, CT and Sewickley, PA. Nancy became a realtor with Howard Hannah Real Estate in Sewickley and a volunteer reading specialist in the Barnstable schools on Cape Cod.
Nancy treasured her family and friendships. She had an infectious smile which people who barely knew her would remark upon. Throughout her life she stayed close with dear friends from childhood, Cornell, Fairfield, Sewickley and Cape Cod. She loved singing, gardening, tennis, paddle tennis, bridge and the beach. Nancy was an active member of the Junior League, a long-time member of St. Stephens Church and a member of the Cape Cod Chorale. When Nancy and Orin retired to Cape Cod they re-connected with old college and Fairfield friends. Their children and grandchildren loved spending time with them on the Cape — crabbing, swimming and fishing at Dowses beach and at their neighborhood lake and playing games in the back yard. Nancy loved working in her garden and enjoyed having family and friends visit with them on their back patio. She and Orin were active members of the Cornell Club, and they attended regular classes at the Academy for Lifelong Learning of Cape Cod. When they tired of the cold weather in the northeast, Nancy and Orin moved to Mt. Pleasant (Charleston), SC, very near to their son, Ted and his family.
Nancy is deeply missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Orin Kenneth Jenkins, her children and their spouses: Janis and Jamie Holley of Manchester, MA, Scott and Lori Jenkins of Marblehead, MA, Jeff and Jeanne Jenkins of Milton, GA, Ted and Holly Jenkins of Daniel Island, SC, by her twelve grandchildren, and by her sisters, Sally Stone Slattery and Susan Stone Thompson.
A memorial celebration will be held in the summer.
