Molly Kirkpatrick Littlejohn

Molly Littlejohn, 65, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, surrounded by the love, comfort and protection of her three boys. Despite their profound grief, her family and friends find comfort in the wonderful memories they have of an extraordinary Mama, Grammy, sister and friend. Molly was born on May 23, 1949, in Memphis, Tenn., the second child and only daughter of Mary Lou and Baxter Bell Kirkpatrick. She lived most of her life in Winston-Salem, N.C., leaving only to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in her youth and, most recently, to be nearer her children and grandchildren in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The inscription on a keepsake in her home reads, “Molly was the kind of lady who knew how to take care of her friends,” appropriate because kindness was the quality for which she was best known and that she valued most in her children and those who had the good fortune to call themselves family or friends. She was the first to call, the first show up with a meal, the first to send flowers, the first to give a hug. Molly was extraordinarily kind in every way, and all who knew and loved her will mourn the loss of a tremendous and compassionate heart. The true loves of Molly’s life were her three sons, Ryan, Josh and Will. Her immeasurable love for them was rivaled only by her adoration for her three grandbabies, all of whom she showered with enormous stuffed animals and other much-loved gifts. She will live on through her boys’ remarkable impressions of her distinctive voice and many unique molly-isms. Molly was thoughtful in every way and dared not show up to her sons’ homes without mountains of Moravian Sugar Cake. They will miss those personal gestures of love, as well as her unmatched meatloaf and baked beans, charm, immense wit and sense of humor, sweet thank-you notes, trademark stubbornness and unwavering support in times of great sadness and joy. Molly’s family will also miss her one-of-a-kind holiday declarations such as, “Happy Valentine Candy!” and “Happy Easter Egg!” Molly hated waiting in lines and would do anything to avoid having her picture taken. She had great affection for animals, especially her two kitties, Annabelle and Lucy. She loved chicken pot pie, any Salem Kitchen goody and the strawberry shortcake her father bought each year on her birthday. Stargazer lilies made her smile, and she knew every Andy Griffith episode by heart. Molly also loved all things pink and had a special fondness for a decades-old Mercedes she was determined to drive until the wheels fell off. Molly will be deeply missed by her sons, Thomas Ryan Littlejohn of Charlotte, N.C., Joshua Cole Littlejohn (Amanda Jagels) of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and William Tyler Littlejohn (Jennifer Gunn) of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; grandchildren, Thomas Willard Baxter, Ida Bell and Miriam Marie; and brother, Don Alan Kirkpatrick Sr. (Madeline Flemming) of Jacksonville, Fla. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Baxter Bell and Mary Lou (Cole) Kirkpatrick, and the father of her children, Dr. Thomas Willard Littlejohn III. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a memorial contribution to Forsyth Humane Society (61 Miller St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27104) and if you wish, perform an unexpected act of kindness on a beautiful, sunshiny day. The family will hold a private memorial service arranged by McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Chapel.
