Mildred P. Hayes, 95, passed away March 8, 2014. She was born September 16, 1918, in Savannah, GA, a daughter of the late Jehue M. Player and Sarah Anna Locklair Player. Mildred retired from Sears Robuck and Company as an accountant. She was a member of the Order of the Daughters of the King, an order for laywomen of the Episcopal church. She was a member of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul. She truly respected the male members of her family. She enjoyed her church, decorating, shopping, embroidery, traveling with her family, and attending the theater. Her family remembers her as a true, modern Charleston southern lady. Besides her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, J. W. Hayes and her grandson, James Morgan Elliott, III. Survivors include one daughter, Sarah Jean Welch and her husband, Tommy, of Wadmalaw Island; two stepdaughters: Susan H. Costa of San Francisco, CA, and Veronica H. Hodgkinson of San Francisco, CA; four grandsons: Chris Elliott of GA,; James Wesley Elliott, and his wife Cheryl, of Summerville, SC; Michael Drew Elliott of North Charleston, SC; and Glenn Henry Welch, Jr., and his wife Gail, of Johns Island, SC; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Leigh Edwards, and her husband Terry Edwards, of Walterboro, SC; 11 great-grandchildren: Jamie Elliott, Christen Elliott, Morgan Elliott, Joshua Elliott, Adam Elliott, Courtney Elliott, Dalton Welch, Ethan Welch, T.J. Edwards, Jessica Edwards and Morgan Edwards; and one great great-grandson, Michael Adam Fleming, Jr.; one sister, Aletha P. Voight of Charleston, SC; one nephew, James Voight, and his wife Erna, of Goose Creek, SC; and one niece, Linda Bean of Topping, VA. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, from 6PM to 8PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel, 2501 Bees Ferry Road, Charleston, SC 29414. A funeral service will be held at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at 1PM, with Pastor Ryan Lyles officiating. Entombment will follow in the Live Oak Memorial Gardens cemetery.
