Matthew Jason Frey

Matthew Jason Frey, 55, of Daniel Island, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, after a courageous battle with Glioblastoma. He was surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 27, 1969, in Kearny, NJ, Matthew, affectionately known as Matt, was the son of Kathryn Oliver Frey and the late Tilghman Blase Frey, Jr.

Matt's childhood was filled with fond memories of summers spent in Normandy Beach, NJ, where he developed a lifelong love for the ocean. As a teenager, he worked as a lifeguard at Seacrest Beach and excelled as an athlete. His passion for sports led him to row on the crew team at the University of Charleston, West Virginia, where he earned a degree in Business. After graduating, Matt remained connected to his love of rowing by coaching at Kearny High School, his alma mater, while working at Frey Industries with his father.

In 2000, Matt married Leah Stack, the love of his life, and together they raised two wonderful children, Jaime and Jack. Their 24 years of marriage were marked by deep love, laughter, shared experiences, and unwavering devotion to family.

Professionally, Matt was a highly respected figure in the logistics industry. After years of working with his family at Frey Industries, he co-founded CGM with his brother and cousin, eventually expanding to Charleston, SC. Matt later established CGM SC, leveraging the opportunities presented by the growing Charleston Port. His expertise and dedication led him to join RSI Logistics as Director of Operations, and following RSI's acquisition by Trinity Rail, Matt was named Executive Vice President of Terminals.

Known for his extraordinary work ethic, leadership, and ability to inspire those around him, Matt was admired not only for his professional achievements but for the integrity with which he approached life. His impact on the logistics community was far-reaching, and he took great pride in mentoring and supporting his colleagues.

Outside of his career, Matt was a devoted family man. He loved music, fitness, and coaching his children in sports. His greatest joy came from cheering on Jaime and Jack in all their endeavors. A selfless and loving father, husband, son, brother, and friend, Matt's strength and kindness touched everyone who knew him.

Even during his 15-month battle with Glioblastoma, Matt remained a warrior, never allowing the diagnosis to dampen his spirit. His unwavering optimism and resilience were a testament to his character. He faced adversity with grace, showing all those around him what it truly means to be strong. His positivity and compassion left a lasting impression on his healthcare team, as he never complained or expressed self-pity, instead focusing on the love and support from his family and friends.

Matt is survived by his beloved wife, Leah; daughter, Jaime; son, Jack; mother, Kathryn; brother, Christopher; nephew, Hayden; and niece, Hudson. He is preceded in death by his father, Tilghman Blase Frey, Jr.
