Mary Jane (Geiger) Hynes, a devoted nurse, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, at the age of 81.
Born on March 27, 1943, in Seaford, DE, to Cy and Leona Geiger, Mary Jane was the third of four children. After attending Villanova University, she pursued a career in nursing and proudly served in the U.S. Navy.
In 1968, Mary Jane met and fell in love with widower, Mike Hynes and his three children. Together, they built a beautiful family, adding three more children to create a close-knit group of siblings who remain forever grateful for the love that brought them together.
Mary Jane was a remarkable woman—strong-willed, compassionate, and unwavering in her commitment to helping others. Her blunt honesty was always paired with genuine care. A pillar of the healthcare community on the Eastern Shore, Mary Jane’s career included teaching at Wor-Wic Community College, co-founding Coastal Hospice, mentoring nurses at Deer’s Head Hospital, and serving as a full-time hospice nurse after earning her Nurse Practitioner designation. Her work left an enduring legacy of compassion and excellence in caregiving.
Later in life, Mary Jane moved to Mount Pleasant, SC, where she relished the opportunity to be near her younger grandchildren. She found joy in cheering them on at their sporting events and helping them navigate life’s challenges with the wisdom and life lessons sports often teach.
Mary Jane was a fierce, loving presence who always gave of herself freely. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Mike Hynes, her daughter, Molly Hynes and her brother Joe Geiger.
Mary Jane is survived by her children: Mary Hynes, Mike Hynes, John Hynes, Tom Hynes, and Moira Kucaba; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two more great-grandchildren on the way as well as her brothers, Rusty and Mike Geiger.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 1:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, SC.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Coastal Hospice in honor of Mary Jane’s lifelong dedication to compassionate care.
