Mary Ruth Carter Burns, 89, of Piedmont, Alabama, passed away on April 12, 2025, in Mount Pleasant, SC.

Mary Ruth Carter Burns was born in Piedmont, Alabama to Jack and Lillian Carter on June 21, 1935. Mary went to school in Jacksonville, Alabama. She married Morris Eugene Burns on November 18, 1950, in Walker, Georgia. For most of her life, Mary worked as a homemaker.

Mary Ruth Carter Burns is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Lillian Carter; husband, Morris Eugene Burns; son, Charles Eugene Burns; brothers, JC Carter, Woodrow Carter, Dewey Carter, Marlin Carter, and Clifton Carter; sisters, Edna Carter and Betty Bendt.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Burns Cumbee (Dale); son, Michael Lee Burns; brother, Veston Carter; four grandchildren, Melissa Burns King (Tim), Charles Robert Cumbee (Russ), Heather Paige Cumbee Hurn (Michael), and Jennifer Leigh Moore (Chris); and three great-grandchildren, Stephanie King, Courtney King, and Kellan Moore.

A Visitation and Funeral service will be held at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel at Thompson Funeral Home, 6340 Old Piedmont Gadsden Highway, Piedmont, AL, 36272, at 1:00 PM, April 26, 2025, with Brother David Cox (Piedmont Church of God), officiating. Burial will follow at the Piedmont Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 236 Vigo Road. Arrangements in Piedmont, AL are being made by Thompson Funeral Home at a later date.

The Pallbearers will be Charles Cumbee, Michael Hurn, Tim King, Eddie Bendt, Tim Carter, and Robert Carter.

The family of Mary Ruth Carter Burns wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Lutheran Hospice, including her nurses, Margaret and Amber; Pastor Todd; social worker Anne Lea; CNA Chinette; and her volunteer Maggie. Many thanks to Meals on Wheels, especially, Joe, Nancy, Carol, Bill, Lucy, Nancy and Pam. The family would also like to thank Dr. Travis Wilkes and Tidewater Pharmacy and friends and family for their help, love, and support. Lastly, they would like to thank her bingo friends, square-dance friends, and the employees from Jack’s Restaurant for the many wonderful memories.
