Mary Ann Nelson

March 20, 1929 — January 17, 2015

Mary Ann was born March 20, 1929 to the late Karl J. and Mary (Moloughney) Schmaelzle. She was a graduate of Syracuse University and a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Mary Ann was a dedicated Army wife who traveled the world with her husband for 21 years. For the past 6 years she lived at the Franke community in Mt Pleasant and was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. Before that, she was a Turtle Watch volunteer on Kiawah Island for many years and was an avid bridge player who orchestrated the social bridge club. She will be deeply missed by her loving family including her husband of 62 years, COL Thomas W. Nelson, her 5 children: MAJ John Nelson (Marilyn) of Parker, CO; COL Mark Nelson (Anne) of Lee, NH; MAJ Paul Nelson (Claire) of Alexandria, VA; Elizabeth Herman (Thomas) of Oak Park, IL; Michael Nelson (Sherry) of Moseley, VA; 13 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to attend her Liturgy of Christian Burial Memorial Mass, 11:00AM, Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at St Benedict Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Center of Charleston, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt Pleasant, SC 29464.
