Mary Agnes DeChriste Taylor passed away at home on March 8, 2024. She was the widow of Robert Harold Talylor. They were married for 58 years. Mary Agnes was the daughter of James Dennis DeChriste and Rose Dorothy Berdych DeChriste.
Mary Agnes grew up on a dairy farm on Yonges island, SC, but she never milked a cow. She graduated from Meggett Elementary School. In 1959 and she graduated from St. Paul's High School. Mary Agnes was a member of the school newspaper staff and a member of the Beta Club, along with being a high school beauty queen. She was active in the Catholic Youth Organizer and attended the National CYO Convention in Philadelphia in 1959. Some of her most cherished memories are when she spent her summers at Camp St. Mary's in Ridgeland, SC.
Mary Agnes attended St. Francis School of Nursing in Charleston, SC and Lander College in Greenwood, SC. She worked for Dr. J.B. Denning in Hollywood before her marriage. After her marriage, she worked for Dr. Alan Harrell until she had her first child.
Mary Agnes volunteered for all her children's schools - 40 years at Blessed Sacrament School, Low Country Academy, and the school board of Palmetto Academy. She volunteered and supported baseball at St. Andrew's Parks and Playground for many years.
Mary Agnes was predeceased by her brothers, Francis S. DeChriste and J. Dennis DeChriste and her sisters, Verlie DeChriste Inabinett and Dolores DeChriste Wright.
Mary Agnes is survived by her sons, R. Wayne Taylor and his wife, Amy, and Jay W. Taylor; her daughters, Shana Rhea Taylor and Rosemary Sybil Taylor; and her grandsons, Sammy Robert Talor and Brant Wayne Taylor. She has an estranged son, Dennis H. Taylor. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and her dear neighbor of many years, Marie Simmons, who has kept an eye on her these past years.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 14, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the McAlister-Smith Funeral & Cremation 2501 Bees Ferry Rd. Charleston, SC 29414, with the Rosary at 7:00 PM.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 15, 2024 at St. Mary's Catholic Church 4255 Highway 165, Yonges Island, SC 29449.
Interment will be at St. Paul's Christ Church Cemetery 4981 Chapel Road Yonges Island, SC 29449.
