Martin J Jones

Martin J Jones, 82, of Mt. Pleasant, SC entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 6, 2016. He was born on Tuesday, September 26, 1933 in Chicago, IL to the late Mrs. Irene M Jones Stack and the late Mr. Martin Joseph Jones. Martin joined the United States Navy when he graduated from high school in Illinois and served his 8 years as enlisted. He retired from the Navy and returned to Chicago to graduate from Loyola University in 1963. He returned to the Navy and entered Officer Candidate School graduating as an Ensign. He served aboard Minesweepers in Charleston, Destroyers in Norfolk Virginia and Key West Florida. He did a tour in Vietnam as the Captain of the Mobile Base Two in the brown water navy. He returned to Charleston and served at the Fleet Training Center and the Navy Fire Fighting School. After his 30 years in the Navy he went to work in the Charleston Naval Ship Yard until it closed and he retired. He was a member of the Charleston Yacht Club and was an avid sailor in the Charleston Ocean Racing Association. He taught sailing at the Charleston Coast Guard Base for many years. He also enjoyed building model ships and half models for his friends. He was a member of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and was an active usher. He did enjoy putting people in the pews at Mass. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Andrea Powers Jones, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and his daughter, Elizabeth Jones Brady and her husband Stephen Gilbert Sperry, of Spartanburg, SC; his sister-in-law, Joanne Kozleski Jones; his nephew, Mark Joseph Jones, of Elk Grove Village, Ill; and many loving friends. He was predeceased by his loving parents and his step father, Carl A. Stack, of Gladstone, MI; one brother, John Robert Jones, of Elk Grove Village, Ill. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 10, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 10:00 AM. Rite of Committal will follow in the Riverview Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in his honor to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 120 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
