Margaret Maginn “Peggy” Ferri, 101, the widow of Ferdinand E. “Ferdy” Ferri, entered into eternal rest at her home in Mt. Pleasant SC on August 30, 2024.
Peggy was born at Station 24 on Sullivan’s Island, SC, on March 27, 1923, to George and Nora Scharlock Maginn. She grew up in that big house with her brothers Bernard and John and her sisters Catherine, Frances, Mary, and Buddy, along with two cousins Louis Stith and Johnny Hutcherson. Her mother Nora and her aunt Katie managed the whole bunch and their many lively friends. A proud “Island Girl,” Peggy recorded, at age 98, her memories of growing up on Sullivan’s Island for the Low Country Digital Library. A graduate of Bishop England High School and Sacred Heart College, which she attended on a scholarship, she was active in drama and sports. During WWII, she was a secretary at Coburg Dairy and Ohlandt’s Groceries. In 1944, she married Ferdy Ferri, then an Army Captain, who had grown up across the street from her at Station 24. Their happy marriage of 46 years was founded on their shared Catholic faith.
Peggy was a devout member of Stella Maris Catholic Church, where she was baptized and received her First Holy Communion. She prayed the Rosary daily, and, because of her devotion to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, she was recognized as a Promoter by the Miraculous Medal Association. She taught for over a decade at Christ Our King-Stella Maris School, and, for years after she retired, her students showed their appreciation by calling her or taking her to lunch. She vigorously supported the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Atlanta Braves. Peggy will always be remembered as a wise and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her many nieces, nephews, and godchildren have fond memories of her kindness and deep affection for them. Numerous charities serving poor children benefitted from her life-long generosity.
Besides her husband, Ferdinand E. Ferri, Peggy was predeceased by her brothers and sisters and their spouses: Bernard Maginn (Dorothy), John Maginn (Leslie), Catherine Simmons (William), Frances Frizelle (Louis), Mary Soffera (Joseph), and Helen “Buddy” Maginn.
She is survived by her children: Michael (Mary), Edward (Brenda), Paul (Gail), and Mary Ferri Jones, and by nine grandchildren: John, Thomas, Katie, Michael Edward, Matthew, Shannon, Allison, Brian, and Kelly. She also had seventeen great-grandchildren: Sister Ella Rose, Joseph, Melissa, Annabelle, Michael, Levi, Sean, Zachary, Dominic, David, Tess, Bridgette, Jonny, Gracilyn, Emilia, Annie, and Felicity.
The family offers special thanks to her thoughtful caregivers – Kendra Garrett, Jaime Smith, Karen Tucker, Mila Garro, Joyce Hamilton, Tammy Scott, Linda Jenkins and Jasmine White.
Friends of the family are invited to Peggy’s visitation on Thursday, September 5th, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, September 6th, at 12:00 noon, at Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, 1204 Middle St. on Sullivan’s Island. The Rite of Committal will follow at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to the Stella Maris Church Building Fund.
