Lt. Col. Larry Lee Shoffner

Lieutenant Colonel Larry L. Shoffner (USAF, Ret.) of Charleston passed away Sunday, April 23, 2023.

Larry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Deirdre A. Keenan Shoffner: son, Brian P. Shoffner of Fort Myers, Florida; daughter, Erin K Shoffner of Charleston; and his sister Paula B. Shoffner of Birchwood, Tennessee.

Lt. Col. Shoffner grew up in Kansas and received a BA degree in political science and history from Wichita State University.  He later earned a MS degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He received his Air Force commission in 1966 and served for over 20 years as an AF Intelligence Officer with assignments in Vietnam, Washington, DC, Honolulu, Hi, Sofia, Bulgaria, Berlin, Germany and Dayton, Ohio. While in Bulgaria, he served as the Air Attaché assigned to the American embassy in Sofia. His assignment in Germany was as the Deputy Chief of the US Military Liaison Mission and commander of the 7462 Special Activities Squadron in Potsdam, East Germany. His decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (with two oak leaf clusters) and the AF Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster. Following his retirement from the Air Force in 1989, Lt. Col. Shoffner became a successful real estate broker in the Durham/Chapel Hill area of North Carolina specializing the sales and marketing of new homes.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, April 28, 2023 from 1-2PM at McAlister- Smith Funeral Home, 869 St. James Avenue, Goose Creek. A private interment will be held at Beaufort National Military Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina.

In lieu of flowers the family ask that memorials be made to your favorite charity or to a local food bank in memory of Larry.
