Leonard Hawthorne "Scooby" Lee passed away on Monday, August 26, 2024. Born on June 13, 1966, Scooby was the youngest child of the late Jean (Maurice) Langston Lee and the late Dr. Leonard Powel Lee.
After graduating High School, Scooby studied history at Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was adept at applying this knowledge to his later work in genealogy.
Like his mother, Scooby developed a passion for history and ancestry research and became a renowned local expert in the field. His advice and skills were sought by people and organizations from around the world as word traveled of his unerring ability to piece together a family's origins from their trinkets, photos and oral history.
Scooby was also known for his mechanical abilities - he could build or fix anything. His true skill lay in the artistry of his wood and metal crafting and repurposing items that he shared with his friends and neighbors. In doing so he was most known for his compassion and giving ways. Always happy to jump in and offer a helping hand, Scooby never sat still if there was an item to fix, something to build or a friend to help.
A lifelong car enthusiast, Scooby enjoyed Formula One car racing and traveled to other countries to enjoy the races. Notably, as a teen Scooby saved his allowance to travel to Germany to buy a racing BMW simply because he wanted the experience.
Scooby's musical tastes ranged from British bands like U2, Depeche Mode and The Police to American and Brazilian Jazz. Scooby enjoyed listening to live bands with Paula and his friends at venues throughout the Lowcountry.
Scooby leaves to cherish his memory his loving companion, Paula Nelson, his brother Raphael Carl Lee (Kathy); his sisters Gloria Montgomery Moore (Alvin); and Robin Lee Griffith (Rusty); four nephews: Rigaud, Roderick, Langston, and Patrick; four nieces: Cheryl (Alain), Karyn (Anthony), Rachel, and Catherine; two great-nephews: Landon and Lucas, and five great-nieces: Amina, Ava, Soleil, Laline, and Emery; many cousins, relatives, friends and neighbors; and his two best friends since grade school: Allen Hazel, and Carl Stent.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Pineland Cemetery, Butler Street, Summerville, SC.
