Lemuel Alton “L.A.†Smith, 83, of James Island, died Sunday, January 04, 2015. L.A. was born November 17, 1931 in Kinston, NC to the late Leo Alton and Mildred (Daughety) Smith. L.A. was a Korean War Veteran who served in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Exxon Co. USA in Charleston and was a longtime member of James Island Presbyterian Church. L. A. enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing and traveling with Mary around the country in their motor home. He will be deeply missed by his family including his wife of 62 years, Mary (Ham) Smith, a daughter, Marilyn Smith Trevino of Charleston, three sons, Ricky Smith (BJ) of James Island, Ronny Smith (Lani) of Charleston, Robby Smith (Barbara) of St. Matthews, 11 grandchildren including; Amy, Ernest, Jason, Brian, Michael, Christian, Christi, Samuel, Joseph, Peter, and Hannah, and 10 great grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation 6:00PM until 8:00PM, Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, James Island Chapel, 347 Folly Rd. Funeral service will be held 1:00PM, Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home with burial to follow at James Island Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
