Radioman Master Chief – Submarines, RMCM (SS) Larry Lyle Cox, age 74, of Goose Creek, SC passed away Sunday, the 21st day of October, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Linda and three children: Carol Traynor (Robert), Connie Singletary, and Timothy Cox (Shirley). He is also survived by five grandchildren: Nichole Johnson (Patrick), Melissa Canada (Justin), Natalie Traynor, Kamrin Singletary (Sarah), and Kyla Singletary and seven great grandchildren: Reagan Johnson, Avery Johnson, Taylor Canada, Patrick Johnson, Leland Singletary, Jack Canada, and Abram Stevens. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Lois Marie Cox, his brother Ronald Cox, and his son William Cox.
RMCM (SS) Larry L. Cox enlisted in the United States Navy on December 5, 1961. He attended Recruit Training in San Diego, California followed by five years at the Naval Air Station, Barbers Point, Hawaii. He then attended Radioman “A” School and served on the USS Tutuila during the Vietnam War where he was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation for the crews’ competence, diligence and exceptional performance in combat operations in the waters off the Republic of Vietnam. He also served on USS Arlington followed by service at Naval Communication Station Key West, Florida. In October 1971 Larry attended and completed Submarine School. Upon completion he completed tours of duty on the USS John Marshall and the USS Daniel Boone. In April 1975 he transferred to Naval Communications Center Mediterranean located in Naples, Italy where he served for four years. Following this tour of duty he returned to submarine fleet duty to serve as Chief of the Boat on the USS Kamehameha and the USS James K. Polk. In July 1984 he took over as the Navigation/Operations Department Leading Petty Officer at the Submarine Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine Training Facility at the Charleston Naval Base. He served in this position until his retirement from Naval Service on July 31, 1986 after over 24 years of honorable service. His military awards include Five Good Conduct Medals, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal (2 Awards), Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, Navy Achievement Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Enlisted Submarine Insignia, Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Unit Citation, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with Two Bronze Stars, and Submarine Deterrent Patrol Pin with Two Silver Stars signifying the completion of eleven successful patrol missions.
RMCM (SS) Larry L. Cox has been an active member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 269 of Goose Creek, S C where he served on the Board of Directors for Americanism and Patriotism, Branch Vice President, and Branch President. He also served as The Fleet Reserve Association Regional Vice President and Regional President. He has served as a member of the Charleston Base Submarine Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 0780, American Legion Post 0166, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10256.
Larry departed this life dearly loved by his family and friends. He leaves a legacy of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren that have been truly blessed by his guidance, wisdom, and deep caring for their personal success and well-being.
The family will receive friends on October 28, 2018 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Goose Creek.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00PM on October 28, 2018 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Goose Creek.
Burial will take place at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at Beaufort National Cemetery, where naval honors will be rendered.
