Landa L. Sandusky (Pittman)

January 29, 1948 — April 21, 2016

Landa L. Sandusky, passed away in the afternoon on April 21, 2016 at Roper Hospital downtown Charleston as a result of complications of heart valve replacement surgery. Landa was 68 years old, and was surrounded by her husband and sons during her last moments of life. Landa Sandusky was born in McComb, MS on January 29, 1948. She was the second child of Alice and Walter Pittman. Jimmy, her brother, was taken away at an early age. Her stepbrothers and stepsister, Jimmy and John Bishop and Tina Hagler live out of state. Landa’s life as a young adult started with her joining the Navy to help find direction and purpose. This is where she met Don, her current husband of 46 years. Shortly after marriage, Don and Landa had two sons, Shane and Ryan. As with most military families they traveled and experienced the world. After leaving the Navy, Landa and the family settled in Charleston. Landa worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard until its closing, then assumed a position at Navy SPAWAR. Landa worked there until age 55 after which she retired from civil service. Landa’s life was always filled with non-stop activity. Up until the end, she enjoyed playing tennis as often as possible. She wasn’t the best on the court, but her greatest joy was meeting new friends, socializing and doing lunch. Landa joined the Red Hat Society (Purplelicious Southern Divas) to satisfy her passion for glitz and glamour, in addition to being a part of a group that promotes bonding and building strength within oneself. But Landa’s prime reason for living was her grandchildren, Eve and Chandler, ages 10 and 3. Eve and Chandler always got top billing. Nana would move mountains for them. This is where the greatest loss will be felt. Every Wednesday, Landa would get up early and deliver food to needy seniors through the “Meals On Wheels” program. So in lieu of flowers, Landa would appreciate if everyone could make a small donation to the Meals on Wheels charity, https://meals-on-wheels.com/donate-now. She always had a warm place in her heart for the people on her route that weren’t as blessed as most of us are. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 30, 2016, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel.
