Kathryn Hermione “Hermie†Rivers, 99, of Mt. Pleasant, SC died on Thursday, December 25, 2014. She was born April 29, 1915 in Wausau, WI to the late Katherine Boss and the late Edward H. Kuhlman. Hermie is both a U.S. Navy and WWII Veteran. She graduated from Mount Mary College and completed post graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin and Radcliffe College. While a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy she met and married her husband of fifty-six years, Vernon G. Rivers, a former Vice-President at the College of Charleston, who preceded her in death (2004). She was a lifelong volunteer for the Republican Party, and loved to engage family, friends and visitors in discussions on politics. She will be remembered as having a strong faith, a wonderful sense of humor, and as a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Hermie is survived by a twin sister, Nathalie Riordan of Vienna, Virginia; two sons: Dr. Ralph Rivers (Cynthia) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Robert Rivers of Jacksonville, Florida; two daughters: Mary Rivers Casper (Michael) of Cleveland, Ohio and Barbara Rivers of Mt. Pleasant, SC; six grandchildren: John Casper (Carrie), Katherine Casper Riethman (Greg), Dr. Christopher Rivers (Laura), Brian Rivers, Patrick Rivers and Rob Rivers, and two great grandchildren: Mackenzie Leigh Rivers and Luke Michael Riethman. Hermie had wonderful neighbors and loved them all. She and Vern considered Don, Ann and Michael Hollerbach as part of the family. She was grateful for the loving care she received from Dr. John Sorrell and his wife Judy and her many caregivers. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 28, 2014 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464, where the vigil wake service will be held at 6 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Christ Our King Catholic Church on Monday, December 29, 2014 at 10:00 AM with Reverend Maximino Tria officiating. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Hermie’s honor to the MUSC Children’s Hospital Fund, 59 Bee Street, MSC 201, Charleston, SC 29425; or the College of Charleston Foundation, 66 George Street, Charleston, SC 29424.
