Judith Ann Helm

JUDITH ANN HELM (née Thompson) was born on August 28, 1948, to the late Ora and Nena (Scaggs) Thompson in Radford, Virginia. Judy, as she was affectionately known, was the youngest of nine children. She was a graduate of Radford High School and went on to work at Radford Hospital in the administrative office. Judy later worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond. Judy then met James Helm, they were married and had a daughter together, Jennifer.

Judy and James owned a successful antique business and tobacco farm together in Powhatan, Virginia for many years. They eventually relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, where they were both happy to escape from the long cold winters in Virginia.

Judy loved her family dearly and was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her heart was full after the birth of her grandson Liam when she became known as Nana Judy. She gave so much love and care to Liam who in turn brought her unconditional joy. Judy adored animals and had dogs as her faithful companions over the years. She enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers and plants. “The kiss of the sun for pardon, the song of the birds for mirth, one is nearer God’s heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth.” (Dorothy Frances Gurney) Judy enjoyed long walks on the beach, both solo and in the company of her family and friends. Later in life, she enjoyed watching the Golden Girls, music documentaries, and napping with her Bichon Frisé, Buddy.

Judy was a determined and resilient soul with an enduring sense of humor that left an impression wherever she went. She was not one to take center stage but would unintentionally light up a room and make her family and friends laugh with her quick wit.

Judith Ann Helm lived a meaningful and peaceful life. However, God decided that he needed Judy and she went home to her Heavenly Father while comforted in the arms of her daughter Jennifer on September 2, 2024.

In addition to her parents, Judy was preceded to heaven by her former husband James Helm, sisters, Glada Goodman, Elmalene Duncan, Doris Crane, Phyllis Gallaher, a brother Ronol Gene Thompson, a nephew Michael, and a niece Carolyn. Judy is survived and missed by her daughter and best friend Jennifer Helm, grandson Liam Hale, son-in-law Thomas Hale of Charleston, sisters Mary Frances Teany of Christiansburg, Nancy Westmoreland of Galax, and brother Robert Thompson of Radford. Her memory also lives on with her nieces and nephews, Judy Elmalene, Theresa, Sharon, Paul, Mary Jane, Randal, Melissa, Pamela, and Amy.

Our hearts are crushed by this unexpected loss. Her warmth and humor will be greatly missed. Judy was one of a kind and to be loved by her was to be truly blessed. Judy was a strong fighter, but she is now embarking on a journey in the heavens to places that we cannot see. We know that when we look up at the bright stars in the night sky, she is free from pain and her spirit is floating peacefully.

To my mother, I love you more than words could ever say. My heart will be lonely without your bright eyes and sweet smile. Your love was unconditional and you were my best friend. It was an honor for me to be your daughter. I'm not sure how to go through this life without you, but you taught me to never give up and that is exactly what I will do. I love you with all my heart always and forever until we meet again. Your daughter and best friend, Jennifer
