Joseph Robert Roy Sr., 86, of Augusta, GA, formerly of Charleston, SC, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2015. He was born on Tuesday, November 20, 1928 in Lowell, MA, a son of the late Lillian Michaud (King) Roy and the late Eli (King) Roy. Joseph served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He received the WWII Victory Medal, as well as Korean War Medals. During his service, he was a WWII Shore Patrolman, while stationed at the base in Pawtuxet, MD. His remaining service was aboard the U.S.S. Tercel, as a Boatswain Third Class, which included service during wartime in France, as well as the Navy Yards stationed in Charleston. It was in Charleston that he met the love of his life, his southern belle. After serving in the US Navy, Joseph painted airplanes at the Air Force Base in Charleston. He became a master carpenter and remodeled many of the historic Charleston homes. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and he sang in the choir at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. His family remembers him as a devout man in his religious beliefs, service to his country and to his family. Besides his parents, Joseph is preceded in death by his wife, Frances Ruth Melfi Roy and five siblings. He is survived by one son, Joseph R. Roy, Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Ravenel, SC; two daughters: Debra Ann Roy of Walterboro, SC and Frances Ruth Roy Gwinn and her husband, Daniel, of Augusta, GA; and two grandchildren: Daniel Joseph Gwinn and Wesleigh Ruth Gwinn. He is also survived by three nephews: Paul Levasseur (Vickie) of MA, Richard Levasseur (Judy) of MA and Ronald Levasseur (Mary Frances) of NH; and one niece, Shelley Lippiello (John) of MA. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5 St. Teresa Drive, Charleston, SC 29407, with Father Joseph Romanoski officiating.
