Joseph John Matuskovic, 43, of Summerville, SC, passed away on Monday, September 8, 2014. He was born on Wednesday, April 21, 1971, in Bronx, NY, a son of Gregory Matuskovic and Annette Cappararo Matuskovic. Joe served as a deputy sheriff with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office. Prior to that, he served as a Sergeant with the City of Charleston Police Department. He was a distinguished graduate from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. He served as a field training officer with both agencies, with over 20 years of service. Joe also worked with at-risk children in Putnam County, NY. Joe enjoyed sports, especially the Gamecocks and the NY Yankees. He was a Batman fan, loved watching movies, listening to music, and enjoyed his computer. He was a dedicated public servant, always striving to improve law enforcement technologies. His family remembers him as a loving son and father, and was devoted to his fiancée. Joe is preceded in death by his grandparents: John and Mary Matuskovic, Joseph and Stella Cappararo, and Vincent Cappararo, known as 'Uncle Vinny'. Joe is survived by his parents, Gregory Matuskovic and Annette Cappararo Matuskovic of Charleston, SC; three children: Payten Matuskovic, London Matuskovic and Tyler Matuskovic; his fiancée, Rhianne Hearn of Summerville, SC, and her children: Kyle Hearn, Kelsey Hearn and Connor Hearn; one brother, Gregory Matuskovic and his wife, Paula, of San Diego, CA; two uncles: Michael Cappararo and his wife, Linda, of NJ, and John Matuskovic and his wife, Betty, of FL; and a number of cousins. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 14, 2014, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel . A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 15, 2014, at 10:00am at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with Father Joseph Romanoski. Burial will follow in the Old St. Andrew's Parish Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Deputy Joe Matuskovic Memorial Fund at any South Carolina Federal Credit Union.
