John "Jack" Thompson

John "Jack" Thompson, 71, beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather passed away Monday, September 2, 2024 in Edisto Island, SC.

Born on July 28, 1953, in Akron, OH, Jack was the son of the late Verla Ballanger and the late John Thompson.

Jack grew up on a farm in Peninsula, Ohio and loved telling stories of being on the farm. He graduated from Woodridge High School and later attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

Jack was a hard-working and dedicated individual, spending several years in the construction industry. He was a Boilermaker early in his career and later became a Construction Superintendent. A large part of his career was working on Department of Energy sites.

He was a devoted husband, father, and brother who loved spending time with his family. Jack cherished his time at home on Edisto Beach. He enjoyed having friends and family visit and always made everyone feel welcome. His quick wit and sense of humor was unmatched, as he made others laugh so easily. His character was strong and he always tried to do the right thing in life. He was an inspiration to all who knew him.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Sheila; son, John (Mary) Thompson; daughter, Jessica (Rob) Wardein; stepdaughter, Jennifer (Thip) Vongsy; stepson, Bubba Tusing; sister, Janet (Harold) Browning; stepbrother, Anthony (Nancy) Mastadonna; stepsister, Linda (Keith) Dodson; granddaughter, Jayden; grandson, Connor; step-granddaughter, Camryn; step-grandsons, Tanner and Renner; niece, Ellie (Shane) Browning and several nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Jack's life to be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, West Ashley.

Memorial gifts may be directed in lieu of flowers to the Patient Support Fund at MUSC Foundation/Hollings Cancer Center, 18 Bee Street, MSC450, Charleston, SC 29425.
