John Patrick McCarthy, 59, formerly of Chicago, IL, died on Monday, January 20, 2014. He was born on Tuesday, July 27, 1954 in Chicago, IL to the late Robert L. McCarthy and Beverly Mitchell McCarthy of San Angelo, TX . John served 20 years in the United States Navy as a Hull Technician First Class. He served aboard the USS Enterprise and other duty stations, and is a veteran of Desert Storm. After his retirement, he went to work at Patriot's Point, working on the museum's ships, mainly the USS Yorktown. He enjoyed the beach, gardening, baking, and especially his grandchildren. His family remembers him as a sweet soul. John is survived by his wife of 28 years, Linda Jean Fuller McCarthy of Isle of Palms, SC; his mother, Beverly Mitchell McCarthy of San Angelo, TX; two daughters: Kathleen Anne McCarthy of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Marian Elizabeth McCarthy Heywood and her husband, Richard, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; stepdaughter, Jennifer Amy Carmel of James Island, SC; two grandsons, Bobby McCarthy of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Alex Roncancio of James Island, SC, and one granddaughter, Carmen Roncancio of James Island, SC. He was also survived by two brothers, Pat McCarthy and Joe McCarthy and his wife Patti; and one sister, Kathy McCarthy Spahn and her husband, John. Besides his father, John was predeceased by one brother, Tim McCarthy. A celebration of life will be held at 2 pm Sunday, January 26, 2014, at the home of Robin and Doug Smith,1331 Fifteen Mile Landing Road, Awendaw, SC 29429, with a reception immediately following.
