John Peter Murphy, 87 of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. passed away from natural causes on February 25, 2023 surrounded by his wife and children. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. John was born and spent his young years in Detroit Michigan. At the age of 17, John joined the United States Marine Corps and spent the next four years serving his country as a corporal in Iwakuni, Japan. He had planned to re-enlist but was encouraged by his peers to use the GI Bill to obtain a college degree and come back as an officer. Life had other plans and John met his life partner, Nancy Turner at Michigan State University. He received a bachelor’s degree in Advertising & Marketing and went on to have a long and distinguished career in this chosen field.
John and Nancy had three children and moved to Atlanta in 1966. He always said that once he came south, he would never leave. He was correct. He lived and worked in Atlanta for the next 34 years and then retired in 2000 to his dream home on a lovely pond in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. John was a devout Catholic and was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. He was recognized by that organization for his annual fundraising efforts on their behalf. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed many rounds at Snee Farms Country Club where he was a member. When he was not working on behalf of the Church or playing golf, John could be found in his favorite place on earth, his back porch overlooking the aforementioned pond. That is how we choose to remember him, lighting his candles, sipping his wine, and enjoying the evening air.
John was predeceased by his sisters Katherine Murphy and Elizabeth Mills and his nephew Michael Murphy. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy Lee Murphy, and his children Dr. Cynthia Lee Murphy, (Dr. James P Wilson), John Prass Murphy (Emily Jo Williams) and Lisa Marie Murphy (Dennis K Poer) as well as his granddaughter Jessica Nicole Harvey (Jonathan Harvey) and his great grandson, Andrew Jonathan Harvey.
