John David Flinn, 87, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.
John was born on March 16, 1931 in Philadelphia, PA to the late John and Edith Flinn. He was preceded in death by his daughter Patricia, wife Jean and brother, Robert Flinn.
He is survived by his wife Mona, daughter Mary Anne and her husband Joe DeYoung, son John Flinn and his wife Susan Flinn and his wife Mona’s children, Jason and Heather, eleven grandchildren and four great-grandsons.
John was born and raised in Philadelphia and joined the United States Marine Corps in 1948, at the age of seventeen (17). He served proudly for twenty-two (22) years, serving in both Korea (at the Chosin Reservoir) and Vietnam.
After retiring from the Marine Corps he began a second career with the United States Secret Service, serving 17 years and retiring as the Head of the Technical Securities Division (TSD).
In 1987, beginning a third career, John formed a consulting firm that provided specialized services in explosives and security issues. His company, Target Analysis International (TAI) provided services to many major multinational corporations and government agencies. He also provided forensics services on criminal and civil litigation matters involving explosives. Additionally, John assisted in the development of training programs for the United States Department of State’s Anti-terrorism Assistance Program, which trained hundreds of police and military students from multiple world countries. In 2005, he was a member of New York City’s Lower Manhattan (World Trade Center) Counter-Terrorism Advisory Team.
Following the end of his third career, John stayed active in and was affiliated with the American Legion, The Chosin Few, the Mustang Association, the Low Country Marines, and the Association for Former Agents/United States Secret Service. For the last ten (10) years he was an active volunteer onboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, harbored in Charleston, SC.
