Joanna P. Runey

Joanna P. Runey, 78 of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, July 21, 2022.

Born on January 26, 1944, in Fall River, MA she was the daughter of the late Josephine Polak (Vaccaro) and Frank Polak.

Joanna spent her childhood in Barrington, RI and relocated to Charleston, SC after marrying her husband of 52 years, George P. Runey, Jr. She graduated from Barrington High School and went on to study psychology at the College of Charleston.

Joanna pursued careers in both teaching and banking. She retired as a Vice President from Regions Bank.

In retirement, she enjoyed reading, gardening, remodeling, traveling, saving strays and cooking (especially spaghetti and meatballs). Joanna loved spending time with her children and spoiling her beloved grandchildren.

She was known for her quick wit, generosity and selfless spirit. She shared her passion for living life to the fullest through mentoring others and finding humor in the face of adversity. She was an incredibly driven, resilient person who provided unending inspiration to those who loved her.

Even when ill, Joanna was never down; she always found the silver lining to keep pushing forward in any situation. She represented the good that we all need in our lives. She was one of a select few that could rise to meet any challenge with a smile. Joanna will always be our strength and guiding light.

Joanna is survived by her daughter, Genevieve Runey (Jeff); son, George Patrick Runey, III (Stacey); grandchildren, Ella Runey, James Runey and Chase Sargent; sister in law, Johanna Tapio; brother, Theodore Polak; sister, Patricia Borges; pets Poppy and Lily and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Memorial Gathering will be held from 11:00am - 1:00pm on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at McAlister-Smith Funeral and Cremation - Mount Pleasant, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at McAlister-Smith Funeral and Cremation - Mount Pleasant, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC 29406.
