Joan Smith Harvey (Smith)

December 18, 1935 — February 16, 2016

Joan S. Harvey, of the Isle of Palms, widow of Jim Harvey, entered into eternal rest at her home on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 after fighting an extended illness. Joan was born in Spartanburg on December 18, 1935 to the late J. B. Smith, Jr. and Elvira S. Smith, the eldest of five siblings. She met the love of her life and husband of 54 years while living with her family in Brunson. She was in the first graduating class of Wade Hampton (Hampton) High School in 1955 before marrying Jim Harvey on June 4, 1955. Joan proved herself to be a loyal and faithful mate to Jim, always supportive and intent on making his home his castle. Joan was a most creative woman, with artwork ranging from sewing her own clothes, pouring and painting ceramics, and sculpting with stained glass. In her retirement she joined the “Crafty Ladies” group at the First United Methodist Church, Isle of Palms and worked tirelessly repurposing discarded furniture which was sold to benefit worthy causes. Joan was Past Worthy Matron of Harmony Hope Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Barnwell SC. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Isle of Palms. Surviving are her sons, J. Martin Harvey, Jr., and his wife Betsy, of Barnwell, Raymond B. Harvey, and his wife, Alison, of Buford, Georgia; three grandsons, James M. Harvey, III, of Spartanburg, R. Daniel Harvey and his wife, Carmen, of Barnwell, R. Bryan Harvey, Jr. and his wife Amanda, of Savannah, Georgia, and a granddaughter, Julie H. Tuttle, and her husband, Allen of Mooresville, NC; and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters, Margaret Ann S. Godfrey of Anderson, SC, Virginia S. Gwinn, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Frances S. Ashmore, of Lyman, SC; and a brother, Jay B. Smith, III of Suwanee, Ga., and many nieces and nephews. The family acknowledges with deep gratitude the loving care given by Lucy Mitchell and Palmetto Hospice, in particular Nikki Dennis, RN. A memorial service will be held on Thursday February 18, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, 21st Ave and Palm Blvd. on the Isle of Palms beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Thomas W. Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends after the service in the Lupo Fellowship Hall. Burial will be private. As an alternative to flowers, memorials may be made in her honor to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 897 Isle of Palms, SC 29451. Expressions of sympathy may be viewed or submitted online at www.McAlister-Smith.com . Arrangements have been entrusted to McALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, MT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1520 RIFLE RANGE ROAD, MT PLEASANT, SC (843) 884-3833.
