Joan Sams Hodgkiss (Sams)

November 25, 1933 — August 5, 2016

Joan Sams Hodgkiss, 82, of Mt. Pleasant, SC entered into eternal rest on Friday, August 5, 2016 after a long and brave fight with breast cancer. She was born on November 25, 1933 in Adams Run, SC to the late Ellen Taylor Sams and James Gregorie Sams. Joan grew up enjoying life in downtown Charleston and had many fond memories living on Broad St. She attended Ashley Hall and graduated from Charleston High. She met the love of her life, George Kingman Hodgkiss Jr, an officer in the US Navy stationed in Charleston. They were married in 1955, the year she graduated from the College of Charleston. Joan taught English for several years and was an active member of St Philip’s Church, the Junior League of Charleston, an artist, and an avid gardener. After raising her 3 children in Mt Pleasant and spending countless weekends camping on Capers Island, she and King retired to Shellmore Ln, McClellanville where they had to rebuild their house after Hurricane Hugo demolished so many homes in this area. They continued to fulfill their dreams of living on the Intracoastal Waterway enjoying family and friends, boating, crabbing, fishing, shrimping, and entertaining on the dock. In 2009 she lost her husband of 54 years. She often summed up their life together with the lyrics “We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun!” She moved back to Mt Pleasant to be near her family and friends. She is survived by her three children, daughter, Elizabeth Huey (Bill), of Mt. Pleasant; two sons, G. Kingman Hodgkiss III (Lisa), of Mt. Pleasant and Richard C. Hodgkiss (Amy), of Lexington, SC; grandchildren Eliza & Emily Huey, Kingman “K.C.” & McCray Hodgkiss; Lizzie, Cory & Mollie Hodgkiss; a brother, Franklin Sams of Edisto, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and one brother, James G. Sams, of Columbia, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Philip's Church, 142 Church St, Charleston, SC 29401. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 12 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip’s Church, 142 Church St, Charleston, SC, and reception to follow in the Parish Hall.
