James W. (Tommy) Tompkins, Jr. 88, of Sullivans Island, SC, entered into eternal rest on May 17, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on June 15, 1932 in Savannah, GA, Tommy was a son of the late James Willis Tompkins, Sr. and Carmel Conklin Tompkins.
Tommy grew up on Sullivans Island with his brother and sisters. He graduated from Bishop England High School and attended the Citadel. He was a combat medic with the United States Army during the Korean War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star with "V" device for meritorious service in combat. He was a longtime member of the VFW and The Elks Club and was a regular member at Stella Maris Catholic Church.
Tommy is survived by his sisters, Marian Wilger (Ken) of Dallas, GA, Carmel Fentress (Tom) of North Augusta, SC, his brother David Tompkins of Mt. Pleasant, SC, as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews. Pallbearers to include David Wilger, Daniel Wilger, Donald Wilger, Kenneth Fentress, Mark Fentress and Adam Fentress. Honorary Pallbearers to inlcude Nicholas Jarrett, Paul Krakeel, Ernest Guertin, Matthew Guertin, Joseph Guertin, Jason Wilger and Ethan Wilger.
The family would like to thank Angela Ferguson and Johnette Collins, as well as Amedisys Hospice for their fine care.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 20, 2021 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral & Cremation, 1520 Rifle Range Rd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
A Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 21, 2021 at 11 AM, at Stella Maris Catholic Church, 1204 Middle Street, Sullivans Island, SC 29482.
The burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Rd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464.
