James Edward Walker, Sr., 86, of Fuquay Varina, NC and husband of the late Irene Kuba Walker, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2016. James Walker was born on December 19, 1929 in Charleston, SC to the late James Leon Walker and the late Catherine “Katie†Leonard Walker. He was a retired educator with the University of North Carolina system. Mr. Walker was also a Vietnam veteran and retired after 20 years of service as a US Army Lt. Colonel. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and also in Sociology from Clemson A&M, a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from NC State University and his Master’s Degree from Campbell University. He was a natural born mechanic and handyman and his nickname was “Mr. Fixitâ€. His family will remember him as a generous and loving father, uncle and brother who led by example rather than words. He was a true friend to all. Survivors include his daughter, Judith Boyd of Parkton, NC; his sons, James Edward Walker, Jr. of Fuqua Varina, NC, John Michael Walker of Newburgh, IN, Robert Patrick Walker of New Castle, OK and Christopher Andrew Walker of Mandeville, LA; 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Russell Walker and Henry Walker, both of Charleston, SC. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his daughter Kathleen Walker; his brothers, John Walker, Lonnie Walker and Bernard Walker; and his sisters, Dorothy Walker, Gloria Morehead, Marguerite Way, Betty O’Connor and Mary Walker. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1pm on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, James Island Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 12pm. Rite of Committal will immediately follow the service at Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Rd, Charleston, SC 29412.
