James John Brady, (Jim) 83 of Newburgh, New York and lately of Charleston SC and Nashville, Tennessee passed away on November 20, 2022 of complications related to a stroke. Jim was born in Newburgh, New York and lived in Charleston, South Carolina, Hot Springs, Virginia, Knoxville, Tennessee and Hackettstown, New Jersey.
Jim was a civil engineer and built tunnel projects up and down the East Coast and across North America and later the world. He enjoyed reading, music, building community and storytelling. His accomplishments in his life were many. Jim was extremely proud to be the head of tunnel construction on the world's most powerful pumped storage project located in Bath County VA, where they achieved record setting tunnel excavation rates. Jim was also proud of being acknowledged for his efforts to rebuild the PATH train station for the Port Authority of NY and NJ after the events of 9/11. Other notable accomplishments that brought him joy include being a past president of the South Carolina Irish Historical Society of Charleston, SC and being a part of the team that created the Charleston Irish Memorial at Charlotte Street Park. He is also a lifetime member of The Moles, a group dedicated to the heavy construction industry.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Brady. He is survived by his five children Jim Brady, Margee Moore, Evie Watters, Monica Brady and Matthew Brady and his second wife Susie Brady and her family.
The visitation will be at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home on James Island at 347 Folly Rd, Charleston, SC 29412 at 5-7 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2022. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Mary of the Annunciation at 95 Hasell St. Charleston, SC 29401 on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery on James Island after mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be sent to the Alzheimer's Association in honor of his late wife.
