Thompkins, James A. 67, of Charleston, SC, a Purple Heart recipient and spouse of Elizabeth Thompkins, passed away Tuesday, October 07, 2014. Born in Elizabeth, NJ, he was the son of the late Joshua and James Ruby Thompkins. He served in the United States Army during Vietnam. James A. Thompkins was a kindhearted man who cared about his children, wife, and anyone that needed the inspiration to become better in their lives. He was the type of person that put himself second to help someone (in need) in a heartbeat! He loved coaching very much and wanted to create hope and self-esteem for those that did not believe in themselves. James tackled the troubled youth in the urban community of Harlem, NYC to give children a positive activity to participate in instead of joining gangs. It was essential for James that he created a sense of mental empowerment for his runners and to be successful outside of sports. It was important to get noticed for college scholarships and be prepared for life. James was a part of the Veteran’s Quality of Life Association, Head Track Coach for Cardinal Hayes Catholic High School & the Bronx Community College Race Committee. James is survived by his wife of thirty years, Elizabeth Thompkins; four sons, James Thompkins, Jr. of Maryland, Chevalier Matthews of New York, NY, Osiris C. Cruz of New York, NY and Masada Thompkins of North Charleston; five grandchildren: Machale Williams, Epiphany Simone Kearny, Ismael Weaver, Isaiah Thompkins & Amaya Thompkins Graveside service will be held Friday, October 10, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in Beaufort National Cemetery.
