Irene Fortunato

Irene Fortunato, 73, of Summerville, SC entered into eternal rest on December 04, 2021 after recently being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. At the time of her death, Irene was surrounded by her husband of 49 years along with her immediate family.
Born on September 11, 1948 in Brooklyn, NY, Irene was the oldest daughter of the late Frederick Maurice Trahan and Ann Trahan.
Irene graduated from Delahanty HS in NY in 1966 and worked for British Airways where she met Dennis. They later married on March 4th, 1972. She remained in Queens, NY until 1990 when they moved to Reston, VA. She continued her career working for Long & Foster and eventually NRTC.

Irene was an avid animal lover, especially for dogs. Irene would often speak of her beloved Zacky who lived with her for 14 years and brought her tremendous joy. After retiring and moving to South Carolina, she volunteered for Berkley Animal Hospital. In 2020, she and Dennis decided to get a Shih Zhu puppy, Arabella. Irene enjoyed walking Arabella and meeting other 'puppy friends' throughout her Del Webb neighborhood.

Irene loved to talk, laugh, and would do anything for her friends and family. She loved to entertain, cook, play games, and travel. Her favorite destination was Italy. Irene was known for her delicious NY cheesecake and around the holidays, she enjoyed baking cookies for her kids. She was truly a great wife, mother, and friend.

Besides her husband, Irene is survived by her 2 sons, Eric Fortunato of Stone Ridge, VA and Luca (Sonia) Fortunato of Bristow, VA.

At her request, Irene will be cremated. The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 18, 2021 from 3:00pm to 4:00pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral & Cremation, 869 St James Ave, Goose Creek, SC 29445. The service will follow at 4pm to in the McAlister-Smith Funeral Chapel.
