Hugh 'Tugar' Swinton Jenkins, 87, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2015. He was born on Tuesday, August 14, 1928, in Adams Run, SC, a son of the late Theodora J. Jenkins and the late James C. Jenkins. Tugar loved to shrimp, crab, fish and swim in Rockville. He graduated from Clemson University, and after graduating, he served two years as a Lieutenant in the US Army. He returned to Clemson to get a Master's Degree in Horticulture. Tugar worked as a county agent in Walterboro, then for Three Oaks Nursery on Johns Island. He was assistant manager at Cross Seed Company. Tugar was an avid gardener. His family will remember him as a kind, generous, loving husband and father. Besides his parents, Tugar is preceded in death by his loving wife Jean “Bookie†Mellard Jenkins; son, John 'Jay' Jenkins, a sister, Charlotte Jenkins, a brother, James C. Jenkins and sister-in-law, Linda Mellard Jenkins. He is survived by two daughters: Jean C. 'Cathy' Jenkins of Charleston, SC and Brenda L. Hockensmith of Charleston, SC; four nieces, many cousins and numerous four-legged furry family members. The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 22, 2015, from 9:00am to 10:00am, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, August 22, 2015, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel, with Chaplain Jay Glasgow officiating. Burial will follow in the Carolina Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
