H. R. “Bud” Sobel, Jr., 87, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2018.
He was born on September 6, 1930 in Annapolis, MD, son of the late Julia Silverman Sobel and the late Rear Admiral USN Herbert R. Sobel.
Bud earned his Bachelor’s degree at Antioch College in 1952, with a major in accounting and a minor in broadcasting. He earned his Master’s degree in speech at the University of Nebraska in 1972. He was a US Navy combat veteran of the Korean War, serving onboard the USS Owen (DD 536). He had an extensive broadcasting career on television and radio sports, including broadcasting football and basketball games for The Citadel, Charleston Southern University, local high schools, University of Oregon, and University of Tennessee, among others, and was a frequent voice on WOKE Radio in Charleston. He retired in 2002, after more than 15 years working at the City of Charleston Commissioners of Public Works (now the Charleston Water System) as an administrative assistant and accountant. Bud was an avid line dancer, and member of the Elks Lodge #242.
Besides his parents, Bud was preceded in death by his wife of 23 years, Nancy L. Schreiner Sobel and his sister, Ann L. Sobel.
He is survived by his son, Russell Sobel (Erin Carter) of Johns Island, SC; granddaughter, Reagan Sobel of Charleston, SC; Bud’s companion of 23 years, Dorothy “Dot” Campbell and her children of Charleston, SC and his niece, Margie Hassan and her family of Brooklyn, NY. Deepest gratitude is extended to Dot and her family, especially Jim and Tina Rockwell, for their years of loving care and support.
The family will receive friends on February 3, 2018, one hour prior to the funeral service, from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM, with the funeral service following at 11:00 AM, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, West Ashley Chapel. There will be a private family burial at Bowman Memorial Cemetery.
