Hoyt Kiser Jr.

LCDR Hoyt Kiser, Jr. USN RET Entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, February 10, 2015. He was the son of the late Hoyt Kiser, Sr. and Bertie Mae Kiser and was born in Hastings, Oklahoma on August 9, 1929. Hoyt graduated from the Waurika High School, in 1946. In April of 1947 he joined the US Navy until his retirement in May of 1971 after 24 years of service. He was advanced to Chief Personnelman in October 1954 and commissioned an Ensign in January of 1960. Hoyt was then selected and promoted to LCDR two years early in October of 1968. His duty assignments included the Bureau of Naval Personnel, four tours; USS Essex (CV9) during the Korean War, Air Anti-submarine Squadron 30, Staff Commander Air Forces, US Atlantic Fleet, USS Saratoga (CVA60) Commander Naval Forces Philippines/CINCPACFLT Representative Philippines, Commandant Sixth Naval District/Commander Naval Base Charleston. He served his last tours as aide for the Late Rear Admiral Herman J. Kossler, USN. After retirement he was employed at the College of Charleston where he established the Personnel Office under the State Personnel System. Hoyt worked at Patriots Point assisting Admiral Kossler in the placement of the USS Yorktown, USS Laffey, and USS Clamagore at Patriots Point. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation (2), navy Achievement Medal (2), Good Conduct Medal (4), Navy Unit Commendation and numerous medals from the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Hoyt had been a member of the US Navy League, The Kiwanis Club of Charleston, Knights of Columbus, 9475 Charter Member in Mt. Pleasant, where he served in all offices except Financial Secretary; The Reverend P N Lynch Assembly 1071 of the Knights of Columbus; a Charter Member of the Father Vincent R. Capodanno Assembly 3243, Mt Pleasant and a Life Time Member of The Military Officers Association of America. He served as President and in many other offices of the Association in the late 70’s and 80’s. Hoyt volunteered at the East Cooper Community Outreach Program, and the East Cooper Regional Medical Center since December 1987. He is survived by three sons, Mark Steven Kiser (Marty), of Suffolk, VA, Richard John Kiser (Nelly), of La Plata, MD, and Gregory Thomas Kiser (Rosemarie), of Saipan; one brother, Melvin W. Kiser, of Waurika, OK, seven grand children, and his dear friend, Nancy Lee Hill, of Mt. Pleasant, SC. He was predeceased by his parents and his loving wife of 54 years, Peggy Kiser who passed away on June 6, 2007. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 19, 2015 from 6 to 8 pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. Rosary will be recited at 6 pm. A Rite of Christian Burial will be held at Christ Our King Catholic Church on Friday, February 20, 2015 at 10:30 am. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens cemetery with Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in his name may be made to Christ Our King Catholic Church “Senior Ministry”, Hospice of Charleston or the Charity of your choice.
